Understanding your path to an autism diagnosis as an adult can be daunting.

You might have spent years feeling out of step, wondering why certain social interactions or sensory experiences seem more challenging for you than for others.

If you suspect you’re on the autism spectrum, getting an accurate assessment is a crucial step toward better self-understanding and finding the right support.

This blog post aims to guide you through the process of an autism assessment for adults.

We’re here to provide you with clear, supportive information to help make this process as straightforward as possible.

What are Some Signs of Autism in Adults?

Autism in adults can manifest in various ways, often making it challenging to identify since symptoms can vary widely from person to person.

Here are some common signs of autism in adults:

  • Social Communication Challenges: Adults with autism might struggle to engage in conversations, misinterpret social cues, or have trouble maintaining friendships. They might need to pick up on body language, tone of voice, or facial expressions, leading to misunderstandings.
  • Rigid Routines and Resistance to Change: Many adults with autism prefer strict routines and may become distressed or anxious if their routines are disrupted. This can include daily habits, work routines, or even hobbies.
  • Special Interests: A common trait is an intense interest in specific topics, often pursued with great passion and detailed knowledge.
  • Sensory Sensitivities: Heightened sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures, and tastes is common. Conversely, some may have reduced sensitivity to pain or other intense sensory inputs.
  • Difficulty with Emotional Regulation: This might manifest as sudden emotional reactions to situations that seem disproportionate or as difficulties in calming down.
  • Preference for Solitude: A preference for spending time alone rather than in social settings or feeling overwhelmed by social interactions can indicate autism.
  • Repetitive Behaviors: Engaging in repetitive movements, such as rocking, pacing, hand-flapping, or persistent repetition of words or phrases.

Challenges with Executive Functioning: This includes difficulties with organizing and prioritizing tasks and sometimes with initiating or completing tasks.

The Importance of Autism Assessment for Adults

Understanding the importance of assessment for adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder is crucial in providing you with the necessary support and interventions tailored to your specific needs.

An assessment can help identify your strengths and challenges, allowing you to understand yourself better and navigate daily life.

It can also help you access appropriate services, such as therapy or vocational support, to enhance your quality of life.

It serves as a roadmap for developing personalized strategies to manage difficulties related to communication, social interactions, sensory sensitivity, and other areas commonly affected by ASD.

Receiving a formal diagnosis through an assessment can validate your experiences and feelings, reducing feelings of isolation or confusion often associated with being different.

It empowers you to embrace your unique traits and seek connections within the autism community for understanding and solidarity.

Autism Assessment for Adults: Our Process

Your evaluation process at the Autism Evaluation Center of South Central Wisconsin will include two online appointments.

This scheduling approach ensures you and your healthcare provider have sufficient time to collect all necessary information and formulate well-informed plans.

Before your first appointment, we will send you a series of clinical questionnaires you must complete. Additional questionnaires might be sent to clarify things further based on the initial assessment results.

Once you have completed all the questionnaires, your doctor will complete your assessment.

This will be followed by a second appointment, during which you will review the findings together and receive a detailed report.
